This course provides students with
a continuous period of on-the-job experience as writers in professional settings. Students intern in local organizations and participate in a weekly seminar
in applied rhetoric. The seminar is designed to prepare students for
their workplace experiences and to give students regular opportunity to discuss
observations, problems, and accomplishments that arise on the job.
As students proceed with the internship experience, they gain practical
experience functioning as writers within professional organizations. They develop skills in reading, or recognizing and analyzing, the cultures
of their particular organizations, and they learn to apply this knowledge
in order to adapt to the culture, contribute to the organization's work,
and eventually identify possibilities for innovation.
Finally, at the end of the semester, students have the opportunity to update
their job materials in preparation for finding full time employment as professional
writers.
