Attendance
Classes meet four times each week (M,T,W, Th). Excused absences
include family emergencies, illness or medical complications (proven
with doctor or nurse’s signature). If you miss class, it is
your responsibility (not your instructor’s) to find out what
was done in class and what the homework is before the next class
session. Note that attendance is calculated as a strict percentage
of the number of times you were in class – in other words,
every unexcused absence in class counts against your overall semester
grade for participation.
Participation Active participation in class and preparation ahead of time
are crucial for practicing your skills and for being successful in
this course. It is not sufficient to simply be present in class. Your
participation will be graded according to the criteria listed here.
Chapter Tests Chapter tests will cover materials discussed in class and
assigned as homework. No make-up tests are allowed. Make-up tests
will be given only in case of a family or medical emergency, for
which you must bring written verification (with dates and cause
of absence).
Homework All assignments are due on the day assigned by your instructor. Late homework will not be accepted.
Quizzes
Vocabulary quizzes may be announced or unannounced.
They will deal with words that your instructor has assigned from the
textbook. If you miss class on the day of a vocabulary quiz, you will
receive a zero for that quiz. No make-up quizzes are allowed.
Projekte During the course of the semester, you will write/design
three short German Projekte (projects) that deal with material covered
in class. More specific details about each assignment will be given
well before the due-date or posted. The general assignments for
GER 101 will be:
Projekt 1: A writing project (in-class essay) Projekt 2: A listening project (telephone conversation) Projekt 3: A role-play and conversation with partner
