General Policies

Attendance

Classes meet three times each week (M, W, F). Attendance is mandatory and absolutely necessary. Excused absences include family emergencies, illness or medical complications (proven with doctor or nurse’s signature). If you miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what was done in class and what the homework is before the next class session—contact a fellow student in the class (not your instructor) to find out this information. Note that attendance is calculated as a strict percentage of the number of times you were in class – in other words, every unexcused absence counts against your overall semester grade.

Tests and Quizzes
No make-up tests are allowed. Make-up tests will be given only in case of a family or medical emergency, for which you must bring written verification (with dates and cause of absence). Chapter tests will cover materials discussed in class and assigned as homework.

Vocabulary quizzes may be announced or unannounced. They will deal with words that your instructor has assigned from the textbook. If you miss class on the day of a vocabulary quiz, you will receive a zero for that quiz. No make-up quizzes are allowed.

Homework
All assignments are due on the day assigned by your instructor. Late homework will not be accepted.

Participation

Active participation in class and preparation ahead of time are crucial for practicing your skills and for being successful in this course. It is not sufficient to simply be present in class. Your participation will be graded according to the criteria listed here.

Projekte
During the course of the semester, you will write/desgin three German projects that deal with material covered in class. For each project, you may come to your instructor's office hour to go through a draft of the assignment. He/she will help you and advise you on how you may improve the assignment. More specific details about each assignment will be given in advance of the due-date. The themes are:
Projekt 1: An in-class essay (topic is TBA)

Projekt 2: An in-class essay (topic is TBA)

Projekt 3: Oral Assessment Project
