High Summer at Leghorn: Timeline of the Production of Percy Bysshe Shelley's The Cenci: A Tragedy in Five Acts

The Cenci Chronology Homepage

Overview

The premise of this timeline is that, if any narrative must be imposed on the modes of production of any literary work to create a functional materialist reading, then perhaps the best form of imposition is a multiple historical one that concurrently shows the materials of conception, the materials of production, and the materials of reception.

In the case of Percy Bysshe Shelley's, The Cenci, a drama that brings the folds of genre, history, law, biography and empire together to test their various limits against those of the subject-formation, such a methodology, one testing also the limits of objective narrative, is perhaps doubly important.

This document highlights a continuance in trauma between Shelley's literary-historical and historical source information, his life at the precise historical moment of The Cenci's production, the literature of the period, and the historical context in which he was writing his drama.

My own presentation uses an HTML medium with a repetition of design elements precisely to show the fluidity with which these concerns trangress the boundaries of subject and temporality, respectively.
