Teamwork (SA 10303), 3 credits
Purdue
Maymester in China: 16-30 May 2010
• Open to students in the
College of Liberal Arts and the College of Engineering.
• The program is offered
annually by CLA and COE with support from the Anna Sohmen Foundation
and the
Purdue Confucius Institute,
and in partnership with the Harbin
Institute of
Technology, Ningbo University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
• SA 10303 is co-taught by Keith
Dickson
(Associate Professor of Classics, FLL), Dianne Atkinson (Communications
Specialist, ME), and
Ying Wu (Ph.D. candidate, FLL).
• In addition to visiting cultural
and industrial sites in Beijing, Harbin, Ningbo, and Shanghai, students
complete
individual assignments
and participate in team projects focusing on
aspects of
Chinese cultural and social life. Maymester 2010 also includes
participation at
the Shanghai Expo.
• Prior to departure,
orientation sessions during Spring Semester provide information on
travel
procedures, visa applications, and packing suggestions, along with
basic
Chinese vocabulary, lessons on etiquette, and cultural background.
• Grading is based on
course participation, assigned readings, daily journals, and a written
team
project due after return to the US.
• An estimated $2400 covers tuition
(3.0
credits), international medical insurance, all transportation costs in
the US
and China, all housing
in China, and most meals. Students should plan
on
approximately $200 for incidentals.
• No significant health issues are
anticipated. Students are advised to consult their physicians about
vaccinations and individual health
concerns.
• Students intending to apply for SA
10303 should
have a valid passport in hand or a passport application on file by 1
January
2010.
• Course applications are

Each application must include a check for $500
made payable to Purdue
University; this deposit is deducted from the total program fee due
Spring
2010.
