While the third semester course in Latin focused on learning to read ancient Latin prose, this fourth semester aims at developing facility in reading and translating Latin verse. We will read selections from one of the great western epics, Vergil's Aeneid, Book 4. While major emphasis will be on translation and analysis of the Latin, we will also read the entire Aeneid in English translation. We will use social and historical data, our readings of Latin text, and English translation as the basis for discussing the literary, social and political background of the Roman epic.
Prerequisite: Latin 201 or equivalent.
