For a chronic neural recording and stimulating device, the device-tissue interface plays an integral role in device performance.  A current major research thrust in the field is the manipulation of this interface to further the lifetime of a chronically implanted system.  This area of research seeks intervention strategies to maintain and improve the quality of the data obtained from a chronic neuroprosthetic device.  An example is shown at the left.  In this case electrical potentials were utilized to convert a poorly functioning device (A) into a highly functional brain-machine interface (B).
