History of the Krazy Eights In The BeginningIn 1942, the Folk-a-Whirlers was organized. The club was founded "to promote and provide diversified types of recreation for its members and for other on- and off-campus groups". It was reputed that this club was the first volunteer group of its kind to direct folk and square-dancing. As a means of developing their leadership abilities, the members would direct play parties, folk-dancing and square-dancing for campus organizations. In the 1948-1949 school year alone, they provided games and dancing for the Dairy Club, Cary Hall, Wesley Foundation, Newman Club and WRH. With the Outing Club they hosted an all-campus square-dance. There was also a Leap-year Leap (dance) they hosted. The club volunteered their services to church and community groups not only in Lafayette but also the surrounding communities. They specialized in all types of folk dances including the polka, waltz, hoe-down, square-dancing and schottische. In the Fall of 1949 their meetings were every other Monday in PMU. FALL 1966 - SPRING 1967Gordon Jones was the caller. Some of the girls wore "matching" gingham dresses. Since they were evolving into a Western Square-Dance club they decided to change the name from Folk-a-Whirlers to Krazy Eights to highlight their main purpose and also because their prompter had received his Master's degree in January 1967 and was becoming too busy travelling for the State 4-H. FALL 1967After a year of evolution, the Krazy Eights finally came into being in the fall of 1967. Unfortunately much of the history of the club has been lost or misplaced, along with many of the older club pictures. If you have pictures or information about the early Krazy Eights, we would like to hear from you! Brenda Maasberg was president, Barb Bobek was VP and Sue Broxon was secretary/treasurer. The caller was Paul Hassell. Meetings were Tuesday nights in the Co-Rec in a large, tiled room near the entrance. The club did mostly square-dancing and a little two-step, plus the Hully Gully. Barb Bobek (who met her husband, Denny Hammer at Krazy Eights) was one of the members writing the Krazy Eights constitution. They took the ideas of the Folk-a-Whirlers constitution and made changes to better match western square-dancing's ideals. Brenda, Barb and Sue worked as a group to design the badge. They did cut-and-paste from a coloring book. Tom Martin, one of the members (and Denny's roommate) sketched the final version of the badge. The Krazy Eights name came about because the group "had a reputation" as a happy-go-lucky group who did a lot of screaming and kicking-up of their heels. One of the club's specialties was the "Salty Dog Rag". They practiced it to perfection and were so well-known for it that clubs would invite them (free) to their dances if they'd put on a demonstration. They also went to a lot of All-Nighters (one the night before finals.) Three to five times a month they would drive to Indianapolis to dance. Paul Hassell was an "older" grad student; his wife was Jane. He also called for the Boilermaker Squares, an "adult" square-dance club which met in West Lafayette at the Women's Gym. Some of the club members were Sue Broxon, Brenda Maasberg, Barb Bobek, Denny Hammer, Pat Lammert, Bob Foster, Tom Martin, Tony Roe, Ernie Smith, Bruce Anderson, Greg Lovick and Andy Pawlowski. There were 10 Krazy Eights in the Debris photo. (Sue and Barb were roommates.) The club had a banner (made by Sue and Barb) and a scrapbook. The cover of the scrapbook was done by Sue. "Turn Out the Lights...the Party's Over" was the closing song. To Thank the Caller, they did the "washing machine" (or "grinder"). Paul loved to call and said the Krazy Eights was his relaxation. The members knew he was a night-owl and made many surprise visits to his house to talk about their problems, ask for guidance, etc. They'd all sit on the floor and talk. One night, they were playing with a Ouija board when their refrigerator gave out one of its infrequent medium- pitched "peeps". One girl shot up, sure that she had contacted a spirit. The members wanted to earn a badge for dancing on an island so they took all Paul's equipment in canoes and paddled to an island in the Tippecanoe River. The river was "up" and the canoe leaked. They almost lost Don Ferris! They went to the house on the island, only to discover that there was no electricity. The students improvised by clapping to Paul's calling and earned their badge. Another time, they wrapped Paul in toilet-paper as he was calling. SPRING 1968Brenda Maasberg was president, Barb Bobek was vice-president, Pat Lammert was secretary, and Andy Pawlowski was treasurer. Don Ferris was Faculty Advisor (called "sponsor" at the time). Lloyd White was the caller. Besides square-dancing, round-dancing was done. (Line-dancing was not done then.) Peggy Ferris, Don's wife, was a round-dance cuer. Dues per semester were not charged. When you came to a meeting, you paid (probably $1) at the door. The club travelled throughout central Indiana. Most other clubs had "older" members (not college-age). The club members went to a convention at Epworth Forest in Indiana, at a campground, where other college-age dancers were. At Paul Hassell's last night as caller for the Boilermaker Squares, the Krazy Eights gave him a caller's suit. (He had received his PhD and was moving back South.) Lloyd and Fran White had some parties at his place in the country during the school year. FALL 1968Brenda Maasberg was president SPRING 1969Brenda Maasberg was president The girls were known as "The Dancing Dolls" in the square-dance community. FALL 1969Brenda Maasberg was president SPRING 1970Brenda Maasberg was president. Meetings were at the Co-rec. FALL 1970Don Ferris was faculty advisor Meetings were in the Co-rec. The club may have had some line-dances but not round-dancing. The club was mostly just a social group with no officers. SPRING 1971Don Ferris was faculty advisor The club may have had some line-dances, but not round-dancing. (Don's wife, Peggy, had broken her leg.) FALL 1971Dayrl Merrill was president Meetings were held Monday nights 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM in the Co-rec. (Lessons 7:00PM-8:20PM. Dancing from 8:30PM-10:00PM. Short meeting from 8:20PM-8:30PM) No round-dancing, but some line-dancing. SPRING 1972Dayrl Merrill was president Meetings were Monday nights 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM in the Co-rec. (Lessons 7:00PM-8:20PM. Short meeting around 8:20PM) No round-dancing, but some line-dancing. Since Bill would be graduating in December, the members gave him a little stuffed skunk that was holding a pennant that was inscribed with "8's". (Bill loved to catch the dancers anticipating.) "Stinky" still goes to all Bill's dances. SPRING 1973Dayrl Merrill was president Meetings were held Monday nights 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm in the Co-rec. Bud Weihermiller called one week and then told the club he would be charging $35/week from then on. (Bud was the caller for the Country Promenaders.) Dayrl Merrill offered to call for the club for a very nominal fee, mainly to help pay for all the equipment he would be buying. The club had never paid a caller before. The dues were raised to $5 if the member were also taking lessons. Half would go to the caller and the other half would go to the club to cover the cost of the new members' badges. Dayrl: "I ordered and had my new equipment in time for the next Monday. Boy, did they suffer. They were lucky if I had one or two notes on key all night. From the start, I have been more comfortable with patter. I don't have to "sing" during that portion of the tip. Our callout and lessons started the next week. By the end of the semester, things were improving and I got at least three or four notes on key each night. Lessons were most of the meetings with a few experienced-dancer tips thrown in during the breaks." SPRING 1973Dayrl Merrill was president and caller; FALL 1973Dayrl Merrill was caller Joan Schultz was in the club. Lessons were $5.00/student. SPRING 1974Dayrl Merrill was caller Lessons were $5.00/student. FALL 1974Dayrl Merrill was caller Lessons were $5/student. SPRING 1976Dayrl Merrill was caller. Lessons were $5/student. FALL 1976A club member (student) was the caller this semester. He either transferred, or was too busy with course-work to continue the Spring semester. SPRING 1977Dayrl Merrill was caller. Lessons were $5/student FALL 1977Dayrl Merrill was caller. SPRING 1978Dayrl Merrill was caller. FALL 1978Dayrl Merrill was caller. Meetings were at the Co-Rec. No rounds or line-dancing. During this school year, members would get "crackpot" badges by: dancing in the swimming pool at the co-rec, dancing in the bathroom at the co-rec. Art Snodgrass got the Purple Heart badge by dancing with a broken ankle in a cast. SPRING 1979Dayrl Merrill was caller. Meetings were at the Co-Rec. Lessons were first, then club dancing. No rounds or line-dancing. Members worked on "crackpot" badges. One big dance, probably at the co-rec. In the club: Art Snodgrass, Barb and Anita (among others). FALL 1979Dayrl Merrill was caller. SPRING 1980Dayrl Merrill was caller. FALL 1980Dayrl Merrill was caller. SPRING 1981Dayrl Merrill, caller. FALL 1981Rus Lengel was faculty advisor Meetings in the Co-rec. Wanda Wienen was in the club. The Thank You to the caller was the clap-clap, knees-bumps routine that was picked up from various singles clubs throughout the state. SPRING 1982Dayrl Merrill was caller. Meetings in the Co-rec FALL 1982Dayrl Merrill was caller Meetings were Monday nights in room 128 at the Co-rec. Usually at least two squares dancing, but more than 16 in the club. Lessons from 7:00PM-8:30PM, then a short business meeting. Dancing from then on til 9:30PM or 10:00PM. Dues $8 which included lessons, a badge and diploma. SPRING 1983Bob Delaney was president Meetings were Monday nights at the Co-rec room 128. 7:00 PM-10:00 PM . 7:00-8:30 was lessons, then a short business meeting and dancing from then on til 9:30 PM or 10:00 PM. Dues $8 which included lessons, a badge and diploma. 32 members with three squares at the meetings. During Dayrl's time with the club, they would invite any and all callers to attend and do a tip or two at their big dance. Usually 5-6 showed up. One year, 12 callers showed up for a three-hour dance. Dayrl Merrill had been there ten years. Rus Lengel did not get tenure, so left Purdue in the summer. FALL 1983Wanda Wienen, faculty advisor (grad student in Chemistry) Meetings were held in the Co-rec. Dayrl left a case with around 75 records in it for the club. Big John from South Bend had the case and records. John was a computer technology student, a hacker and a fledgling caller. He liked the mathematics of calling but suffered tremendously from "mike fright". SPRING 1984Wanda Wienen was faculty advisor (Chem grad student). Meetings were held in the Co-rec. FALL 1984Wanda Wienen was faculty advisor The members had met Clarence & Janet at the club Clarence & Janet belonged to. "Everyone" knew Clarence was a caller. The meetings were held in the PMU South Tower. A few meetings were held at the Co-rec but the members didn't like meeting there. The room "stunk" from all the sweaty bodies that had used it during the day according to Clarence. It was also hard for non-students to dance with the club having meetings in the Co-rec (you have to show your student ID, or be a guest of a student and pay a fee). Wanda picked the South Tower in PMU as it was available on a constant basis and near parking garages. This way, local singles who were interested in dancing with the club (and there were) would be able to. Line-dancing between tips was usually done. Usually a Fall and/or Spring dance was held on a Sunday afternoon with an outside caller. (According to Clarence, the club really couldn't afford an outside caller.) SPRING 1985Wanda Wienen was faculty advisor Meetings were held in the PMU South Tower. Wanda remembers one graduation dance that was so KRAZY that they almost had injuries. "Public" dances were held after graduation. It was difficult due to finals, but the club managed to get a pretty good crowd for a Sunday afternoon dance. "Older" dancers would come just to watch "the antics" of the Krazy Eights. The "Salty Dog Rag" was still a favorite to watch as Clarence invariably got to the turntable and increased the speed. (The Krazy Eights kept up!) At that time, it was a tradition to have an outside caller for their twice-a-year "public" dances. There were also lots of Road Trips. FALL 1985Janet Mohler was faculty advisor (worked in Krannert) Meetings were held in PMU South Tower. SPRING 1986Laura Bailey was president Meetings were held in PMU South Tower. On April 1, the officers for the next school year were elected: Kathleen Lynch (President), Martin Busche (VP), Angela Graves (Secretary/Treasurer) and Nathan McCracken (Publicity). SPRING 1987Martin Busche was president Meetings were held in PMU South Tower. Line-dancing between tips. Food & Fun was required to bring a jug of ice-water and cups to the meetings as the only water fountain was down a flight of stairs. Phyllis Jackson made "club" skirts for $5/apiece. They had black on the top and bottom with the middle panel of "gold" with small white polkadots. On April 1, the officers for the next school year were elected: Rich Farrough (President), Jamie Lee Beck (VP), Steve Graves (Secretary/Treasurer), Frances Schwartz (Publicity) and Jim Doell (Food & Fun). Meetings were held at the South Tower in PMU, Thursday nights 7:30PM - 9:00 PM. Line-dancing between tips.
Art Snodgrass, an old Krazy Eight we met at the New Dancer's Roundup, was the caller for approximately a month until his job changed to evening-shift. He recommended Russ Catterson as his replacement. SPRING 1992Cidney Bever bowed out as president because of course overload. Suzie Delay was now president again. Chris White was Vice President, Brad Watson was Secretary/Treasurer and Shirl Sereque was Food & Fun, Ken Mueller was faculty advisor, and Russ Catterson was caller; Dues $12.50 There were 13 members.

broke so after this school year, we decided to look for another caller.
FALL 1992Suzie Delay was President; Christopher White was Vice President; Bradley Watson was Secretary/Treasurer; Shirl Sereque was Food & Fun, Ken Mueller was Faculty Advisor; and Jack Naylor was Caller.
Dues were $12.50. There were 13 members. The meeting location was changed since there were nights that we
weren't able to get the PMU South Tower. This meant having to dance in
a room in Stewart Center. The groups having meetings in adjacent rooms
would complain about our noise level. Tomahawk would request the South
Tower as it has a stage where their pledges could stand in full view of
the actives. The Medieval Society also liked having meetings in a room
with a stage. The room in Mechanical Engineering has a wooden floor
(better for dancing), there is a water fountain right outside the door
and we have no competition for the room. November 14 - Square-dancing at the Tippecanoe Mall re-opening. November 22 - Fall Dance with Jack Naylorwas caller, at Burtsfield
