The Story of the Red Shoe

Several years ago, I was walking down Main Street in Lafayette, IN. It was late in the evening. I had just left the Lafayette Brewing Company, heading toward the Java Roaster (for reasons obvious if you know anything about the beer at LBC). Then I saw on the sidewalk--this single red shoe, open toe, a little scuffed on the bottom, size 7. Just a single red shoe as if Cinderella herself stepped out of it. So I said to myself, "Well, I must have that!" I took it home and put it on my bookshelf.

Fast forward 2 years: My best friend, Julie Price, lived in Paris for awhile. Julie used to take pictures of a stuffed "weinie dog" doing odd things--like appearing to be biting off part of the Eiffel Tower. When I decided to take a Grand Tour of Europe, Julie said I had to take the Red Shoe along and take pictures of it at famous European landmarks. I thought it sounded a little creepy, like those commercials in the 1960s and 70s where the Cream of Wheat bowl followed kids around all day. But I said what the hell? And it turned into a competition: what item has visited more places? The Weinie Dog? or The Red Shoe?
