Project One: Introduction to [Visual] Rhetoric
Part D: Contributing to the CoOp
Weight: 10%
Deliverables:
- One visual image.
- 800-1200 word paper documenting/explicating/justifying the rhetorical choices
you made while constructing your visual.
Project One, Part D asks you to compose your own "visual essay" for the coOp. Anything you want. In a sentence, the assignment is: "create something that sasy something to someone somehow." Eventually, I will ask you to explain all the somethings and somehows, but for this coming Wednesday, I only care about the image.
I know the assignment is wide open--this is probably the most difficult part. My advice is to do something that you are passionate about or invested in--try not to do something "just to do the assignment." Also, my first advice is to choose what kind of project you think you want to do: are you creating something personal (for a small audience)? Or are you interested in making a broader statement?
As I mentioned above, WEDNESDAY we will "workshop" (share works in progress) in the lab. You will get feedback from five of your peers--the more work you do before Wednesday, the more this session will help you. So, while I am asking for drafts of your image, I am NOT asking for rough draft--I expect the work to have some measure of polish and sophistication.
If issues arrive with technology, I am available Monday after class or you can visit the DLC. Remember that the DLC is far more helpful with specific questions.
For those of you completely blanking on an idea, I offer this: turn one of Burke's clauses regarding the definition of man (symbol-using animal, inventor of the negative, rotten with perfection, etc) into a picture. Or, create a series of pictures that illustrate his definition. This is quite different than anything I have received before, but a colleague of mine suggested it and I think it could produce some interesting visuals.
Finally, the paper (as those before it) should address what you hoped to accomplish with your image and detail the choices you made to maximize your efforts.
