Excercises
No need to wait for the audition piece to start piece practicing!
Here are a few exercises to help prepare you for the audition piece. (and just general good practice)
-
Start the exercises at a comfortable speed
-
Increase the tempo marking in small intervals until the desired setting.
-
Take your time, and don’t sacrifice technique or sound quality for speed.
-
Your goal should eventually be a marching tempo of 120 bpm (160 bpm for 12/8 exercises).
(triplets at 160 are the same speed as 16th notes at 120)
These are merely a jumping off point. They cover some basic hybrids, but this kind of approach can help for anything else
-
Identify the rudiment, or pattern you wish to practice
-
Break it down by hands
-
What is your left hand playing? (put one hand on rim or leg)
- What is your right hand playing?
-
If you are able to play each hand individually, it is not an issue of muscle or ability, you have to train your mind.
-
Make a small exercise, (right-hand, left-hand, together, etc….)
-
Build the rudiment
-
Identify the correct sticking and be able to play that (check pattern)
-
Add parts of the rudiment piece by piece (flams, diddles, accents, etc, individually)
- Make a small exercise building from the check pattern (for example: check pattern, flam only, diddle only, flam and diddle)
