There are a number of ways to get involved with POLE:

+ Come to one of our meetings, or an announced callout.
+ Join the POLE Facebook group.
+ Contact our organization.

Officially, we are the Purdue Organization for Labor Equality, but our friends just call us POLE. Together, we combat workplace injustice both locally and abroad.

Originally formed in September 1998 out of anti-sweatshop/anti-WTO movement, the organization was originally called "Purdue Students Against Sweatshops" or PSAS, as we were, and still are, loosely affiliated with United Students Against Sweatshops, a nationwide anti-sweat group that helps provide support for various pro-labor/human rights student collectives.

In 2003, PSAS changed its name to POLE, due to the much broader range of issues addressed by the organization. Past efforts by PSAS/POLE have included the Fair Trade Coffee Campaign, labor issues with CINTAS (a laundry company affiliated with Purdue Union Hotel), and our successful fight for Purdue to sign a code of conduct in association with the Workers' Rights Consortium (WRC).

At present, our very vocal campaign is in support of the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP), a plan that uses our power as students to ensure fair wages and proper treatment of workers in the university apparel industry. Since Purdue University has not adopted the DSP, our group is very active in convincing our administration to sign on.
