Student Questions
Is there an Orthodox Church on campus?
There is no Orthodox Church on Purdue's campus, however, just across the river lies St. Alexis Orthodox Church of the Carpatho-Russian Archdiocese. The church is among the 'canonical' churches, being ultimately subject to Constantinople. For liturgical needs closer to campus we also have a small chapel in the OCF house. Anyone is welcome to come in for prayer or to light a candle. Services, except Sunday Liturgy, are held regularly. Check the calendar for more details.
I'm not familiar with the Carpatho-Russians, will the Liturgy be the same as I am used to?
As the only Orthodox Church within 30 miles, St. Alexis must cater to a variety of traditions and customs. For practical reasons, English is the liturgical language used in this parish. Various musical melodies from many traditions are used throughout the cycle of services, so you might find something familiar in the course of regular attendance. St. Alexis celebrates the Liturgy of John Chrysostom on Sundays unless the season dictates otherwise. In this sense, the liturgy will be exactly the same. However, every Orthodox Church has its own 'feel' to it. In this sense, St. Alexis is probably not the same as you are used to if every church is different. Come and see for yourself.
So how do I get to this fancy house you mentioned?
The OCF House is located on 915 5th Street in West Lafayette on the corner of 5th St, and Waldron- right on campus! We've attached a little map below for your convenience. Also, you must first get to Purdue which is easy enough to find from I-65.
I'd like to attend services at St. Alexis, but I have no car. Can I get a ride somehow?
Yes. Many people at Purdue, both on and off capus, regularly attend services at St. Alexis. There are plenty of willing drivers who will be happy to take peers to church. Non-student parishoners ar also great sources of transportation in times of need. Please see the contacts page.
If I need a priest for any reason, who should I call?
Father Gregory is dedicated to serving those of his parish, and those students who pass through the halls of Purdue. He can provide any liturgical need such as a house (room) blessing, confession, counseling, or just to talk. Please consult the contacts page for his information.
Can I live in the OCF House?
The OCF house was founded to provide campus access to the church for students. Three students tend to the house and pay rent and utilities. Each student in the house may stay for the duration of his studies at Purdue. When a student announces his departure from the house, at least a semester prior to leaving, an announcement is made to the students. Any willing student may apply to fill the vacancy. The ultimate decision will lie with the current residents and advisors. Since the founding of the house in 2004, the house has been occupied by male residents, not that it couldn't be a female house. It will depend on circumstance of the students involved. Hopefully future students will strive to keep the house, for continual residents are necessary to keep a foothold on campus. Initial inquiry should be made to Father Gregory.
Alumni
I loved what Purdue OCF did for me, and would like to help. What can I do?
There are many ways to assist the growth of the OCF mission on campus. Monetary donations are always accepted, see contacts. If you are not blessed with abundant wealth, you could certainly donate some time to share with students, or anything else that you feel would be appropriate.
Visitors
I'd love to share some personal experience or insight with your group. Would it be alright to schedule a visit?
We are always thrilled to have others express interest in helping our group to grow spiritually. We welcome both clergy and laymen for instruction, discussion, or entertainment. To schedule a visit, see contacts for more information.
I'll be coming from quite some distance, is there someplace you would recommend staying?
It's funny you should ask... It just so happens that the OCF House itself has a cozy little guestroom. We can certainly provide hospitality to the best of our ability, but understand that space is rather limited unless you are flexible with sleeping arrangements. Under normal circumstances, we have 1 extra twin bed for a guest but can accomodate several more by necessity with air mattresses and the like. See contacts to make arrangements.
