Perception and Production of Secondary Cues to Voicing

This work is in collaboration with Fernando Llanos, Alexander Francis, and Amanda Shultz

In this project we investigate the connection between two acoustic properties, voice onset time (VOT) and onset f0 (fundamental frequency at the vowel onset), in the perception and production of stop consonant voicing. We examine the patterns of onset f0 in two languages, English and Spanish, to determine whether its covariation with VOT is affected by the phonological voicing status of the stop consonant. We also address the issue of joint perceptual use of VOT and onset f0 in voicing categorization and how the contribution of onset f0 to voicing decisions is affected by the native language of the listeners (English and Spanish) and exposure to second language.
