Mathematical Bases of Constraint-based Approaches to Phonology

This is an ongoing project in collaboration with Giulio Caviglia

In this project we consider the underlying mathematic similaries between two prominent constraint-based approaches to phonological modeling (Optimality Theory and Harmonic Grammars) and the advantages that weighted-constraint approaches may have over the strict-domination models, in particular in the area of modeling phonological frequency in variation and typology.
