About Opportunity Motorsports
Opportunity Motorsports (OM) is a Purdue student organization which was founded in the fall of 2004 with the aim of providing intermediate level experience to those hard-working and dedicated Purdue University students with a strong desire to pursue a career in the professional motorsports industry.
One of the primary mission statements of Opportunity Motorsports is to provide students who otherwise would not have a chance, the opportunity to make use of the classroom theories learned in a highly practical, highly interdisciplinary, and highly pressured situations. Quite simply, the goal of OM is to provide opportunities to students to apply their experience to a highly competitive and increasingly more engineering driven industry. Not only do the students exercise their technical skills, but maintaining an entirely student-operated race team also emphasizes marketing, management, and accounting skills.
As such, prior to 2006 OM was teamed with Hendricks County Motorsports of Indianapolis, also competing in the CRA Super Series. Two to four members of OM traveled with the team to each event during the 2005 season, gaining experience with these vehicles, before the team moved to Circle Bound Racing for a full assault on the 2006 season.
OM partnered with Circle Bound Racing of Brownsburg, IN for the 2006 season. Members worked on a full-time basis during the summer months and part-time basis during the school sessions managing nearly every aspect of this semi-professional race team, gaining that experience necessary to give students an edge in this highly competitive arena.
This highly unique program has served to increase Purdue University’s awareness in the auto racing industry, and has generated a great deal of interest in both OM and the university. Opportunity Motorsports will host several student recruitment events featuring the vehicle on campus during the school year in an effort to increase the group’s awareness on campus, invite more excited members to join, and showcase our marketing partners to campus.
Several OM members will return to Circle Bound Racing for the 2007 season accompanied by a group of excited new members who look to build from strong showings in 2006. The OM team will consist of students ranging from freshman to senior in many of Purdue’s engineering curriculum. Senior Agricultural and Biological Engineer Dan Hobbs will head the team of engineers and engineering techniologists.
