Ledo is a soldier for a Galactic Army sworn to destroy the evil Hideauze (which look like deep sea creatures). At the end of their attack on their enemies home planet, Ledo gets knocked off the proper wormhole path and gets sent into the deep reaches of space. He awakens on EARTH (which wasn’t even supposed to exist anymore) and has a rough start with the locals, including the courier Amy.
Everyone on the boat is trying to wrap their heads around Ledo and Chamber; Amy becomes a minor advisor because she “knows” him best. Ledo is confused as to why the world isn’t a frozen wasteland like the army told him it was. Amy and Ledo are trying to make peace. Apparently, the ice melted a long time ago, leaving behind oceans that move with the galaxy’s currents. Pirates are attacking the salvagers. At Amy’s request, Ledo gets involved and kills all of the pirates.
Just so you know, killing the pirates was a bad move. Now, the fleet needs to prepare for retribution. Ledo is starting to learn how life on this new Earth works. The pirate chief Rackage Lobster has appeared to take revenge and they employ Ledo in the new battle on the condition that he kills no one. In the end, the fleet wins, but Ledo has to kill the people who won’t surrender.
Ledo has to work to pay off the damage to the hangar, but he’s not very good at it and someone else takes charge. He goes to meet Dr. Ordum for “intel” on space and the organization of the fleet. The doctor has no answers, but doesn't think the fleet is ”inefficient”. Bevel (Amy’s sick little brother)says we’re all just living on, not being wasteful. It rains and everyone rushes to collect all of the water. Maybe he’ll leave this soldier mentality behind. It’s a flute, but he’s remembering something sad when Bevel plays it.
Ledo is looking for a job he can do. Amy is going to help him find a job and understand this new war. It’s not going well, so he tries to look on his own. When the winds stop blowing, they repair the ships. They go swimming… Ledo gets his first job because he ruined the meat. The girls go racing to the top of the sprinkler towers. Ledo gets chased by some transgender prostitutes. They cook the meat on Chamber… because he’s black. He had to retrieve some sauce. He’s learning Japanese really fast.
Ledo is worried about his wages being too much and he is going to try fishing as a job. Unfortunately, he can’t swim and couldn't do it at all. Chamber goes fishing while Ledo goes to the carnival. Amy is a dancer and Ledo tries new food. He’s being fought over by the salvagers (or at least Chamber). The special main dish looks like a Hideauze. Ledo goes fishing with Chamber and they finally succeed. Amy dances for Ledo to thank him for “protecting” her from the weather… Ledo learns that work is supporting someone and decides to try salvaging. A Hideauze attacks while he is salvaging with Bellows.
They're fighting a whale squid and he squishes it. Whoops, they're considered sacred being. This causes some problems. He's determined to kill them all. The whale squids and Hideauze are the same species. Pinion wants to use him to salvage the nesting area and avenge his brother. The ideology is different here, coexist and mutual prosperity. A shoal of whale squids approaches and the Commodore takes command and stops all engines. The monsters swim under the fleet without attacking. Pinion and one of the leaders try to get permission to leave the fleet (which would leave it defenseless) and the Commodore has a heart attack?
The Commodore passes on his position to Ridget and dies. Ledo finds out there is no way he can return to the fleet because of the distance. Ledo decides to go with the departing fleet to kill whale squids. Amy decides to stay and everyone watches the Commodore's funeral. Ridget gives a speech on rebuilding together.
The divergent fleet sets out to the Sea of fog and meet lots of the whale squid. Ledo vows to kill all of them. Pinion's brother was eaten by whale squids the last time he was here. Ledo finds young whale squids and is beginning to have some doubts. He finds classified information and finds out the history of Earth and human Evolvers. They changed the basis of biology and created the Hideauze by combining humans and whale squid. The Hideauze turned "evil" and Ledo isn't sure what to do anymore.
