Hey folks...

Can't stay long, but thought I'd bring up a very interesting book I just read called Made From Scratch by a 3rd wave feminist named Jean Zimmerman, which covers our current lack of all things (truly) homemade--and what devaluing homemaking does to our culture as a whole. Now, before you run away screaming, think about it--when was the last time you sewed something? Made an item from *scratch*--not a pre-boxed mix? Really felt like you'd accomplished something at the end of the day after a hard day's housework--but had no one to brag to about it? If you look at prevailing culture (and yes, she covers "living history" groups, too! Smile), anything associated w/home is considered "boring", a "drudgery", and "too much of an effort"--but if that's the case, then why do we admire people who CAN cook? Sew? And why are people taking their hours down to part-time or less to stay home and MAKE a home? Is it because of something we feel we lack in modern society?

Anyhow, this copy is a library book--if you want to read it, go to the Tipp. Co. Library and put their copy on hold, because I'll be returning it Tuesday! Smile

Okay--now *discuss*...Smile

Hmmm..... when was the last time I made anything from scratch......... I just can't think! lol......

I have to agree, I think home made is FAR better. And Djenn and the author are right, when you make something with your own two little hands it seems some how so much more satisfying!.. Even when I use a box mix for cake or brownies, I amost always add something of my own.... carmel apple cake, cherry cheese cake brownies, black forest cake, (all box mix cakes) ummmm.... the list goes on!

and sew something? who me? never! Rolling Eyes

Hee hee heee
Since I'm the one who showed Djenn the book, I'll firmly come out on the side of 'homemade'.

Cool

Speaking of homemade, the Talbott Street Art Fair is gonna happen this next weekend, and it's right across the street from my apartment Cool

Hmmm... somehow 'home-made' sounds like a green-and-orange crocheted sweater, where 'hand-crafted' sounds like burled oak and mother-of-pearl inlay. Maybe 'hand-crafted' implies a skilled
trades[person] in a well-tooled shop vs 'home-made' where duct-tape may be involved. Smile

But in general, I'd say I prefer human-manufactured items to machine manufactured items for things that will fill heirloom-type roles, though this may correspond to the fact that people usually choose to hand craft from wood, metal, and stone rather than synthetics -- and I would certainly rather drink from a plastic stadium cup at a party than worry about dropping someone's hand-made ceramic or glass...

ramble, ramble....

yeah--that and working w/acrylic in your home tends to make the joint SMELL funny (<--worked in an injection molding (plastics) plant for a few years!)! Very Happy

I think, actually, that if DUCT TAPE is involved we have to call it "SCA-inspired"--through some agreement w/the BoD or something, don't we?

Actually--speaking of making plastic stuff: saw a FUN idea in the "Art of Jewelry" book (both Cathy and I have copies) where you take molding clay (the sort that doesn't dry out), casting resin, and leaves and make resin casts of them and turn them into charms. Could be a fun project...?

What say y'all? This one would be ULTRA cheap, as we'd be casting leaves (or flowers--though they'd need to be able to lie fairly flat) and a can of resin would be MORE than enough for everybody--$11/can plus $3/4 sticks of molding clay....plus glitter and dye for tinting, if you're into that sort of thing...Smile
