Okay--this is for the non-edible stuff--like "How to Make a Candle" or "How to Make Incense" or even "How to Make Your Own Books of Shadows--from Scratch"! This is also a good place for asking "...exactly HOW does one stain wood?" or "How do I know what fabric to ask for at the fabric store?"--anything that relates to crafts!
We'd also like to hear about your Divine connections to your creations: how knitting a scarf can actually be a protective garment sacred to Venus or making your own rune set can connect you to Odin and the Norns...
So if you have a fabulous project, or want to have one, post it here! _________________ "I believe in everything, nothing is sacred. I believe in nothing, everything is sacred." --Tom Robbins, "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" |

Well, since you asked... How would one go about putting a gentle sway into a pane of glass...i.e. like those old bowed-glass picture frames, or, say, a scrying surface?
If I were to suspend a flat pane by the edges, and take a torch to it, will I end up with a face full of glass or something? I'm sure that letting it cool too fast would be bad, so what would you glass people suggest as a possible technique? well, actually--if you just took a torch to a *cold* piece of glass, then yes: you would end up w/ what we in the glass biz call "frit" or "small chunks of glass, sometimes flying at high velocity through the air and embedding themselves all over the torch-holder and surrounding vicinity"!
Actually, what you'd want to do is "slump" the glass--which is where you take your regular sheet o' glass (that you want formed) and set it into a "slumping form": or a dish-shaped form that is the angle/shape you want the final piece to be. You set the glass and form into a cold kiln and slowly raise the temperature until you just see your glass start to drop into the dish, and then you shut off the kiln and wait until the form and glass and kiln return to room temperature--usually in about a day or so. You REALLY don't want this to go FAST or your glass will shatter due to the stress of the surface of the glass cooling off faster than the interior of it (see "annealing glass"--or ask Sigulf! ). Slow is the way to go--but once it's slumped and cooled, you're ready to go!
If you are working with rods or tubes of glass (for beads or glass blowing) you can use a torch to work VERY SMALL, CONCENTRATED amounts of glass, but if you are working w/sheets (as in the piece you're talking about), then you need to use a kiln. Otherwise, "frit happens"!
...gods, that pun was SOOOO bad, it's almost worthy of my husband!! Does that help? _________________ "I believe in everything, nothing is sacred. I believe in nothing, everything is sacred." --Tom Robbins, "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" |

I'm glad I asked rather than just jumping into experimentation _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world:

Yeah, this past week I made a protection doll honoring Cerridwyn. I was planning on making her pretty simple since I've never done this before, but she just kept speaking to me. I used Cathy's Goddess body pattern and stuffed her with herbs and fuzzies. I also made her hair & head-dress and stitched a combination of 2 runes on her robe about the area of her chest. I had a lot of fun making this doll so I will probably make some more in the future. I just need to get my own stock of fun things to decorate them with so I'm not raiding Mom-mart! I'm not sure how to put pictures on here or if I can, so let me know how and I'll put a pic of her up here!
Brightest Blessings,
Becki
P.S.
I also have some basic sewing, caligraphy, and macrame skills if you need anything done or help with anything! I am also good at organizing and brainstorming; I am new to Paganism so I don't have a lot of pre-set ideas engrained in my head! |

Something I was thinking about the other day was little portable altars.
We have a cigar shoppe here on the circle that I go to, and they always always have tons of empty cigar boxes of all shapes and sizes. So I was thinking...decoupage anyone?? _________________ Thank you for flying Church of England, cake or death?

I think that is an absolutely wonderful idea! We're getting ready to wrap up the semester here at Purdue, but I think that would be a very good workshop for PAN or LAPA to do. We'll keep in touch as we try to plan fun stuff for the summer for those of us who are stuck here in town. Hope things are going well with you, miss you!
Brightest Blessings,
