PGSG to Host 2nd Annual Next Generation Scholars Research Fair

On December 9, 2011, Purdue graduate students will introduce students from the local community to the diversity and creativity reflected in Purdue’s graduate programs during the 2^nd Annual Next Generation Scholars Research Fair to be held on-campus at the Discovery Learning Research Center. At the research fair, Purdue graduate students will present their research to students from Lafayette Tecumseh Junior High School, who are invited to ask questions and further investigate what they learn.

Graduate students will primarily present via poster presentations, but are encouraged to include demonstrations and brief discussions. This format provides an important learning experience for each group, as the role reversal will enable new ways of looking into research and academia for each participant. The junior high students will see quality research presentations representing the wide range of research being conducted by graduate students at Purdue University, and the graduate students will have the opportunity to improve their presentation skills by presenting their research to a new audience.

Some projects will also be videotaped and provided to the school for future use in the classroom. In addition to the research fair, the junior high school students will participate in tours of Discovery Park, eat lunch with graduate students, and receive an official Next Generation Scholars program booklet with published abstracts, all aimed at inspiring students to get excited about higher education and their potential as researchers.

There is no registration fee or other costs associated with graduate student’s participation. Free poster printing will be provided for the graduate students who participate, making this a cost-free event. Additionally, all participants will receive a free lunch on-campus and graduate students will be invited to a Next Generation Scholars social event on the evening of December 9^th. PGSG will host an optional professional preparation workshop to help graduate students cater their presentations to a junior high school audience.
