Myths About Fraternity Life
Myth: My son will get hazed if he joins Phi Sigma Kappa
There is absolutely no hazing at Phi Sigma Kappa. Our associate members are not exposed to any kind of physical, verbal or mental abuse during the process of pledging.
Myth: Joining Phi Sigma Kappa will hurt my son's grades.
Most members have found this to not be true. In fact many of our member's grades went up after joining the house.
This is due to our great location and our strict academic policy.
Our location on Waldron Street is right on campus. The nearest classroom building (the Computer Science Building) actually borders our property. Our house is within 2 blocks of 10 campus computer labs (one of which is open 24-7) and 2 libraries. If your son ever has trouble studying in the chapter house, a quite computer lab or library is literally seconds away.
Our academic policy requires that all members maintain a GPA above a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Any member who's semester GPA is 2.0 or lower is required to attend 8 hours of study tables each week. Any member who's semester GPA is 2.5 or lower is required to attend 4 hours of study tables each week. Failure to meet these requirements may result in monetary fines and social probation. Our academic policy also provides cash rewards for the 3 highest GPAs in the house and the most improved GPA.
Myth: Fraternity parties are out of control
We must follow the risk management policies of both Phi Sigma Kappa Nationals and Purdue's Interfraternity Council. These policies have many requirements. A few examples of these requirements are that we must register every function that we hold with the university, we must provide at least 2 sober drivers and that we can't allow hard alcohol, glass bottles or kegs.
At nearly every function that we hold, members of the Interfraternity Council's Lowerboard will come to make sure that we are following the risk management policy. If we fail to comply with the requirements in the
policies, our chapter will face social probation or even suspension from the University. As you can see, we are very heavily regulated and scrutinized to ensure the safety of our members and guests.
Myth: Living in a fraternity is expensive
Rent may be expensive at some houses, but it is very reasonable at Phi Sigma Kappa. Currently, rent is $450 a month for 8 months of the school year, for a annual total of $3,600. This includes all utilities, a parking spot, highspeed internet and satellite TV. That's way cheaper than living in the dorms!
