2002 Summer Games
2002 Summer games will live on in everyone's memory as one of the great years of competition. How can anyone forget the wet and wild weekend the swimmers had, the striking and side splitting times the bowlers will remember, this could not be run off by the lightening speed of the track and field or the rolling thunder of the bocce players. This was all highlighted by the opening ceremony, the dances, pizza party and just getting together for relaxation and reminiscing. It was an award winning time for all!

ATHLETE CORNER
ALPs Input Council Meets Monthly
The Input Council needs you.
Ideas you might have to make Special Olympics better can be heard. How? By being in ALPs. It is where you can be free to say what you wish as long as it's about Special Olympics. ALPs can help you become a better person by talking to others about your sport and so on. This allows you to explore other opportunities.
ALPs is about giving you a say in Special Olympics besides just being an athlete. Ask yourself, What could I do to change Special Olympics?
The athletes are in charge of each month's Tippecanoe County ALPs Input Council Meeting. Brian Glick, who is head of our Area 4 ALPs Input Council, and Mike Doyle, a coach and volunteer, are there each month to facilitate the meeting. Brian helps lead the meetings and Mike takes minutes and answers any questions we might have about Special Olympics.
One of the things we have been talking about is a social activity. One we agreed on recently was going to Indiana Beach. What others can you think of?
Jennifer Hoover, Athlete

Letters - I like Special Olympics:
I have been in Special Olympics for 19 years. I do bowling and golf. I did bowling lots of years and golf 4 years. I got a lot of medals and ribbons. And I went to Terre Haute a lot of years.
I would like to thank my parents and all of my old coaches and my roommate Bill Willey.

Tippecanoe County Represented At International ALPs Meeting
One athlete and two coaches from Tippecanoe County attended the Global ALPs Task Force meeting in July. ALPs, or Athlete Leadership Programs, are aimed at giving athletes more of a role in Special Olympics. The meeting was held in Dublin, Ireland, which will host the 2003 World Special Olympics Games.
Tippecanoe County athlete Brian Glick has been a part of the ALPs Task Force since it was formed in 1999. Tippecanoe County coach Lyn Doyle attended the meeting with Brian as his helper. Brian works with an initiative to get more Special Olympics athletes involved in coaching. Brian has been a coach and assistant coach in softball and basketball.
Other initiatives include athletes as officials, an initiative coordinated by Tippecanoe County coach Mike Doyle; Global Messengers, a program that has athletes giving speeches to various groups; athletes on boards; athletes and the media; and athlete input councils and congress.
At the meeting in Dublin, Task Force members heard that Special Olympics Inc. has approved their proposals on both Athlete and Coach Codes of Conduct. The codes set minimum standards of conduct for athletes and coaches. Local programs can add to these codes.
Lyn Doyle
