Lessoning with the Purdue
Equestrian Team

Lessons are not a required
activity, but most members in the club attend lessons regularly.
Lessons are held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings each week. Members are assigned to a lesson depending
on their level of ability (determined through a brief trial
ride) and lessons are planned around a student's class/work
schedule. Lessons are an hour long and are taught by the team's
head coach, Jerry Steinmetz.
Lessons are held at Foxton Farms
in Romney, Indiana, which is about a twenty minute drive from
campus. Members carpool to make sure that everyone gets to
lessons on time, whether you have a car or not. Foxton is owned
and managed by Purdue coach Jerry Steinmetz and Dacia Johnson
and has been home to the Purdue Equestrian Team since 1980. It
is also home to the horses owned by the Purdue Equestrian Team
which were all generously donated. Our horses range in ability
from tried-and-true beginner horses to green horses that
challenge our more experienced riders.
Showing members are expected to
attend lessons regularly. If you want to show, you must attend a
lesson in the week prior to the show. Members are also highly
encouraged to ride a different horse each week (we have over
twenty!) in order to prepare themselves for the intercollegiate
showing atmosphere.
Lessons can be paid by semester or
through different payment options, such as the following:
