It seems not to long ago that the Purdue Sailing Club was just this
small little club where a select few went out every weekend hung out
and sailed. Times are changing and the club is growing. With the
recent increase in our fleet numbers, thanks to lots of work by
Tom Mitchell and key donations from Dick Jennings, our club has now
progressed into one of the largest and best organized collegiate
sailing clubs in the Midwest.
The Purdue University Sailing Club has also acquired a new practice
site (Lake Harner) that is only ten minutes from campus. The site
has made it easier for students to get out on the water during the
week. Last year Wabash National donated a semi trailer to the club
as a storage unit for the Lake Harner site. The club has also
purchased a floating dock for the site. With these two additions
the new site has developed into a wonderful new practice site.
The focus of the club has now been turned toward
replacing the boathouse at Shafer. The years are starting to
catch up with our beloved boathouse. The roof is almost beyond
repair and the fleet size has out grown the storage at Shafer.
The Boathouse is not in the best condition and the right storm
may leave the club homeless. Although this probably won't happen
for a couple years, we are starting to plan for the future of the
club be putting a plan in motion. We have already talked about how much
we should spend on the boat house and what new features we would like it to have.
The new boathouse would be a great asset to the club and would help project our club
into the future.
The Club is looking into a new steel frame
building to be placed on the existing site. This building will
include everything from storage, workshop, common area, and a class
room specifically for the "Learn to Sail Program".
With all we have on our plate we have a lot of work ahead of us,
but as everyday goes by our club grows stronger and better prepared
for the future.
"I feel that you are justified in looking into
the future with true assurance, because you have a mode of living
in which we find the joy of life and the joy of work harmoniously
combined. Added to this is the spirit of ambition which pervades
your very being, and seems to make the day's work like a happy child
at play." ~Albert Einstein~
