Project: Adopt-A-Highway
Contact: Creighton Kaiser - cdkaiser@purdue.edu
The goal of Adopt-A-Highway is to travel to a section of highway in the West Lafayette area and pick up all trash and debris on the side of the road. We generally collect at least four large trash bags work of trash each time we clean. These cleaning events happen once per month.
Project: Alumni Newsletter
We are currently working on sending out the first ever PSG Alumni Newsletter. This newsletter could reach potentially up to 500 past PSG members. The newsletter will be sent via email to alumni during dead week. This issue talks about current and past projects and include a letter from Student Body Vice President Amy McManama.
Project: Boilermaker World Cup
This is an event that PSG is having in the spring, which will be a campus-wide soccer competition. It will consist of different groups of students that will form teams from specific countries. The event is also planned to have food from the different countries represented in the soccer competition.
Project: Campus Safety
Contact: Amy McManama - amcmanam@purdue.edu
Our main safety initiative for the year is to increase membership of the Purdue Student Security Patrol. Currently there are 25 students and PSG is working to increase that number to 50. We want to ensure that more students are able to utilize the Safe Walk Program and more areas of campus are covered during their nightly patrols. In addition, the 494-SAFE number will be printed on the back of student ids beginning next fall. Two safety walks conducted by PSG and the Campus Safety Task Force have been completed. Problems such as bad lighting, broken sidewalks, call boxes, etc. are reported on and then the results are relayed to the city of West Lafayette to fix areas of campus that hinder a safer campus. Permanent safety posters in residence halls and in buildings that students are in late at night are being finalized. These safety posters promote the Safe Walk program by advertising the 494-SAFE number. More safety walks will be completed next semester in Tower Acres, near the residence halls and various areas that are heavily populated with student housing. Please contact Amy McManama for any safety concerns, suggestions or questions.
Project: Community Service Response Team
Contact: Creighton Kaiser - cdkaiser@purdue.edu
This is a project that is still in the developing stages. It will consist of a list of Purdue student organizations that would be willing to go to places in the Lafayette area and complete community service projects. Individuals and/or organizations would call or email PSG asking for help with a job, and one of the groups on the team would help complete the task.
Project: Newsletter
Contact: Lindsay Van Houten - lvanhout@purdue.edu
The Newsletter has been brought back this year and is a great addition to Purdue Student Government's communication. It is sent out once a month to the students as a means to let students become more aware of what PSG is doing for them and also presents opportunities for them to get involved. The first edition was printed and stuffed in the Exponents. We hope to do this once more for second semester. Between now and then, they are being sent out electronically, via email. Also, everyone has access to view the newsletters which are posted on this website. We hope that students take the chance to read it and become more knowledgeable about all that PSG is doing to represent them.
Project: Queer Resource Center
Contact: Nick Garcia - npgarcia@purdue.edu
PSG is currently in collaboration with the Queer Resource Center to acquire funding to create the positions of director and secretary, and possibly find a new office.
Project: Recreational Sports Center
We are working to gather information and educate the student body about the need for an improved Recreational Sports Center.
Project: Spirit Week and Homecoming
PSG was active in this years Homecoming activities. We created a float based on the Homecoming theme "How the Boilermakers got their name", as well as creating a banner and being involved in the Pep Rally.
Project: Student Concerns Reception
Contact: Kimberly Chapman - chapmaks@purdue.edu
We are planning a second reception for student concers are Thanksgiving Break. We hope to pass out hot chocolate, have surveys and invite other organizations to participate.
Project: Textbook List
Contact: Jonathan Sandhu - jsandhu@purdue.edu
One goal this year of the Academic Affairs Committee is to create a Textbook List that will be posted online before the start of a semester. This information can be used by students to obtain their books by means other than the bookstore and have them well in advance of the semester.
