EVEN:
GRECO-ROMAN BUILDING COMPLEXES: List and describe the function
of various monumental public buildings one could expect to encounter in a
typical Greco-Roman city or sanctuary (discuss at least FIVE
kinds of monuments). Design your own Polis or Sanctuary by arranging the
essential structures with labels on a plan. Use the building types listed in
the IMAGES SECTION.
ODD: THE WILY SLAVE: Using the stock character of
the "Wily Slave" as your basis, discuss Plautus' treatment of slavery
in Roman society. Describe the status of
this slave vis-a-vis his
master(s), non-slaves, women, and fellow slaves. What is the attitude of the slave toward his
social superiors and theirs toward him?
How much autonomy does the slave appear to enjoy (what is his origin,
for that matter)? How great a mutual
dependency existed between the master and the slave and for what reasons? What are the slave's aspirations in life and
how likely is he to attain these?
