What does it take to qualify as a Writing Program Administrator—good "people skills," on-the-job experience, or disciplinary expertise in writing studies?

This is an important question for rhetoric and composition scholars, for at one or more points in their academic careers they almost certainly will be expected to work for a period as writing program administrators. The seminar will explore changes in the answers to this question, changes in approaches to answering it, and changes in who is authorized to ask and to answer it.

The seminar will address both theory and praxis of writing program administration for diverse writing programs (first-year composition, professional writing, writing centers, WAC programs) in a variety of institutional contexts.

Course readings and seminar discussions and activities will address themes such as the following:

    1. ethical implications of defining the responsibilities of writing program administrators;
    2. rhetorical strategies for documenting writing program administration;
    3. institutional politics of characterizing writing program administration as "service," "teaching," and/or "research";
    4. other issues suggested by students and course readings.
In addition to contributing to class discussions and auditing the WPA-L listserv, students will give a class presentation, prepare a major paper, and complete an experiential learning component.

Course is required for Secondary Area in Writing Program Administration.

Course may count toward secondary area in Professional Writing.
