Goals for class 1/29/2004 Compiling your workplace observation report:
 
  • What gives your observations significance?
    1. What information provides contrast with other workplaces?
    2. What is accomplished at the workplace you study?
    3. What do you expect your readers to get?
    4. What distinguishes these people from others?
  • How are you defining professional writing?
    1. What would Henry say? (Other than refering to shards.)
    2. What do other professional writing researchers say?
    3. Would Lunsford (p11) recognize "alternative forms of agency and ways of knowing" in this workplace?
    4. Is focus shifted from "owning to owning up?"
    5. "From rights and entitlements to responsibilities ... and answerability?"
    6. Check Henry's appendices. Appendix A: What backgrounds do the writers at your workplace share? Appendix B: What topics do these folks bring to your mind? Appendix C: What work and positions do these professional writers fill?
  • Copyediting

    2. What is its purpose?
    3. What is accomplished there?
    4. What distinguishes this space from others?
  • Write about people
    1. Who are they?
    2. What do they do?
    3. Why do they do it?
    4. What is at stake?
    5. Who are the stakeholders?
    6. What details about their activities can you use to provide your reader with enough information to "know" this workplace?
  • Write about yourself
    1. What is your relationship to this place and the people who inhabit it?
    2. What is your purpose here?
    3. Can you offer anything to this organization or institution?
    4. What distinguishes this space from others for you?
