Beta Sigma Chapter, Purdue University

Philanthropy

Sigma Kappa Sorority provides many opportunities for collegiate members and alumnae to become involved in community service and philanthropic projects. Chapters across the country support Sigma Kappa philanthropies, which include:

Gerontology

In 1954, Sigma Kappa became the first national sorority to recognize the need for continued, comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of the elderly. Collegiate and alumnae members throughout the country volunteer their time and talent in support of numerous projects to assist and benefit the elderly. The Beta Sigma chapter visits nursing homes in the Lafayette.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's Disease was adopted as a national philanthropy in 1984. Since 1988, the Foundation has awarded over $1,000,000 in research grants to colleges and universities for continued Alzheimer's research. Nationally, Sigma Kappa is the third largest contributor towards Alzheimer's Disease research and education.

Every fall, the Beta Sigma chapter and other Sigma Kappa chapters around the country sell lollipops to raise money and to increase awareness for the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. Our entire chapter also participates in the annual Memory Walk with local alumnae and Sigma Kappa National Headquarters employees.

Inherit the Earth

Adopted in 1992, Inherit the Earth is Sigma Kappa's national service project benefiting the environment. Each year, chapters plan a service project that protects and preserves our local community. Beta Sigma participates in Adopt-a-Highway and helps clean up our two-mile section each semester.

Maine Sea Coast Mission

Since 1911, Sigma Kappa has honored its Maine roots by supporting the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society. Each November, Beta Sigma and other collegiate chapters donate funds and needed supplies to help support the Mission's worthy cause. The Maine Sea Coast Mission provides assistance to isolated mainland communities as well as to those residing on islands along the shoreline.
