Paul Kei Matsuda reported on the work of CCCC Committee on Second Language Writing, including the position statement, a resource list for writing teachers (being developed by Tony Silva) and possibilities for book-length publications from NCTE (being developed by Bob Weissberg).
Colleen Brice reported on this year's L2 writing workshop, which enrolled about 20 participants. Based on her discussion with other workshop members and participants, Brice suggested the idea of proposing two separate workshops--Wednesday morning and Wednesday afternoon--on specific topics, such as response and assessment.
The group discussed possible topics for 2001 SIG meeting, including
- cross-over between L1 and L2
- accommodating L2 writers
- non-ESL faculty's views
- CCCC position statement
The idea of an additional panel focusing on changing nature of the English language from the perspective of world Englishes was raised.
The group decided that the 2001 SIG meeting will focus on the history and the current status of second language writing issues at CCCC. Paul Kei Matsuda, Chair of CCCC Committee on Second Language Writing, will present and discuss the CCCC Statement on Second Language Writers and Writing, which is currently under review by CCCC Executive Committee. The group will also invite another speaker who has been involved in the CCCC to discuss the history of L2 writing issues at CCCC.
