Course Policies Assignments - The Play Online Writing Lab (OWL) |
Course Requirements and Class Policies * Assignments Reading: Students are expected to come to class having read that particular day’s reading assignment as indicated in the course calendar. Keep in mind that you might be given unannounced quizzes on assigned readings any day. Writing: Students will write and submit five assignments of different genres throughout this semester. The schedule and due dates for each assignment are listed in the course calendar. Detailed guidelines for each assignment will be distributed in class as each one is introduced. They will also be posted on the course webpage. All the five major assignments should be submitted in order to get a passing grade for the course. Submitting an assignment late might considerably lower the grade for that particular assignment. In addition to these major assignments, you will also need to write several short responses and reflection papers throughout the semester. * Assignment Submission Format: All writing assigned as homework should be typed and double-spaced, using a standard font type and size. No cover-pages are required; put your name on the top-left corner of the first page and if the assignment is longer than a single page, number the pages and staple them together. Online submission: Online submissions will be accepted only from “@purdue.edu” accounts. No excuse will be accepted concerning online submissions (such as e-mail failures), so when submitting an assignment online, make sure that your file is properly attached and that the e-mail is sent to the correct address. * Attendance and Participation Students are strongly encouraged to attend all class meetings. Participating in class actively and constructively is essential since in-class writing activities and peer-evaluations are integral parts of the course. No excuse will be accepted for excessive absence. Absences will not be penalized up to three (3) hours. After your third absence, every hour you miss will lower your course grade by half a letter grade. Also, if you do not have your draft on peer-review days, you will be counted absent. * Academic Honesty The written work you submit for this class should be your own, and you should cite any sources you reference in any version (draft or final) of your class projects. Please refer to “Academic Honesty” in the “Student Guide to Introductory Composition” for information on intellectual property. If you have any questions concerning this, please contact me or the Writing Lab in HEAV 226. * Course Grades Your course grade will be determined as follows: I. Autobiographical Essay 15 % II. The Play 15 % III. The Short Story 15 % IV. The Novel 15 % V. Research Paper 20 % VI. Short Assignments 10 % VII. Attendance & Participation 10 % = 100 %
* A note on classroom conduct: During class time, you are only allowed to use the Internet if it pertains to class. Random surfing, checking e-mails, using messenger of chat programs will not be tolerated.
* Grading: For the five major assignments, you will be graded as follows: F < 60 < D < 65 < D+ < 70 < C < 75 < C+ < 80 < B < 85 < B+ < 90 < A < 95 < A+ However, since Purdue University does not honor plus/minus grades, your final course grade will be determined as follows: F < 60 < D < 70 < C < 80 < B < 90 < A
