 Course Description:

This course is designed as a general introduction to some important works of American fiction. However, it does not claim to provide a survey of “canonical” American novels. As the subtitle of the course suggests, the text selection for this course has been made around the theme of war and its relation to American society. The theme of War can be observed as a continuous thread in American literature as American history presents ample material from as early as the Revolutionary War of the late 18th century to the recent war in Iraq. The texts selected for this course reflect four of these major military conflicts: the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. However, not all the books will be directly about war; some of the novels reflect only the after effects of war on individuals and society.
