Course Requirements |
Course Requirements:
Papers: You will be given specific written guidelines for each paper in class. I expect 1000-1200 words for the first paper and 1200-1500 words for the second paper. You will be given the chance to revise and resubmit the first paper but not the second one. Due dates for the papers are as listed in calendar and late submission without prior notice will not be accepted. Exams: You will be given a Midterm exam in Week 8 and a Final exam during the Finals week. The Midterm exam will be given during class time (50 minutes) while the Final exam will be 2 hours long. The date of the Midterm exam is indicated in the calendar; the Final exam date will be determined later.
Discussion leading: In collaboration with a classmate, you will need to prepare to lead discussion for one day’s assigned reading. You will be given more specific guidelines about discussion leading in class. You will sign up for this during the first week of classes. Reading quizzes: You will be given a reading quiz on each book. The dates for quizzes are not indicated in the calendar. They will basically test whether that day’s assigned reading has been completed by the student. Being prepared for class will be sufficient; you will not need to do any additional preparation. If you miss a reading quiz, you will receive zero -0- for that quiz and no make-ups will be given.
Attendance & Participation Regular attendance is essential to the format of this class. The first three (3) hours of absence will be excused, but if you miss more than three hours, five (5) % of your final grade will be taken off for any additional hours you miss. Active class participation is encouraged as this course is designed in the form of class discussion rather than lectures. Anyone should feel free to express opinions as long as it pertains to class discussion. However, you should avoid getting into personal conflicts in class. As the instructor, I expect you to be respectful of others’ opinions as I will respect yours. |
