Facts about Hemingway:

Hemingway was an ambulance driver at the Italian front and was wounded on both legs on July 8, 1918 as a result of a shell explosion.

He committed suicide on July 2, 1961 by shooting himself in the head. He was receiving ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) for depression and blamed it for significant memory loss that instigated his suidice.

 Fact about World War I:

 967 American soldiers committed suicide during the single-year involvement of the US in World War I in 1917-1918.
