Facts about World War II:

World War II started with the Nazi invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. Just a week earlier, Britain had signed a 'Mutual Assistance Treaty' with Poland against Nazi threat, so Britain, together with France, Australia and New Zealand, declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939.

The US remained neutral for the first 2 years until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The US declared war on Japan the next day.

War ended in Europe soon after Adolf Hitler's suicide on April 30, 1945. The US dropped A-bombs first on Hiroshima on August 6, then on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, which led to unconditional Japanese surrender on August 14, 1945.

World War II left over 50 million people of all nationalities dead.
