Course Description:

This course is designed as a general introduction to some important works of American literature but it does not claim to provide a survey of canonical American novels. The title of the course suggests, ‘great American books’ will be read and discussed in this class; however, the purpose of the course is more to complicate the term ‘great’ than to simply affirm the greatness of any given book. The books have been selected to reflect significant social issues pertinent to particular time periods in American cultural history.

As in introductory-level literature course, our most important goals in this course will be;

* learning to appreciate reading important works of American literature from different time periods,

* acquiring the basic tools necessary to talk and write about literary works in general,

* scrutinizing the title “Great American Books” and analyzing the assigned books in relation to it,

* acquiring critical perspectives on American culture as reflected in a particular time period’s literature.
