Service Around Purdue

While a large part of the mission of Purdue Timmy Global Health is to service communities far from West Lafayette, we also aim to improve the community around us. We believe we can have a significant impact on our local community by organizing methods for our members to engage in community service. These opportunities allow us to improve health in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and the surrounding communities.

Get Onboard Active Learning (GOAL)

GOAL is a program sponsored by IU Health that promotes healthly lifestyles for both children and their families in Lafayette and other Indiana communities. It aims to teach educate children and their families on how to maintain a healthy, balanced diet, identify high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, increase physical activity, work to develop a positive body image, and pursue other healthy interests. Timmy students help this program by volunteering their time to assist in teaching these behaviors to local children in the Lafayette community.

Lafayette Urban Ministries (LUM)

Lafayette Urban Ministries is an organization that strives to give back hope, a future, and self-respect to people in the Lafayette community that find themselves afflicted by poverty. Timmy volunteers with this organization through its after school programs. Timmy students assist children, who often come from disadvantaged families, by helping them with homework, playing games, and just spending time with them.

Global Health Week

Global Health Week is a weeklong event aimed to spread awareness and educate those around Purdue and the surrounding communities about the problems and challenges the world faces today regarding global and public health. This week is filled with many events and features a Global Health Panel, where experts in this field are available to answer questions about the status of global health, challenges we face, and current solutions that are being implemented.

Mental Health Week

Mental Health Week is a similar weekling event to Global Health Week, but it focuses specifically on mental health. This week is filled with events that aim to increase awareness of mental health issues and promote methods to maintain a positive mental health. It culminates in a panel where experts are available to discuss issues in mental health and current solutions being implemented.

Winterization is a Purdue-wide community service event that Timmy Global Health is able to assist in by providing volunteers to help complete their goals. They aim to prepare the yards of the elderly and disabled of Tippecanoe County for the coming winter months by raking leaves, cleaning gutters, washing windows, trimming shrubs, and other similar activities.
