What is this crazy game called Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee, (commonly called just "Ultimate") is a fast-paced game that is played on a field 70 yards long, 40 yards wide, with 25 yards for each endzone. The sport combines elements from football, basketball, soccer, and handling the disc (Frisbee© is a trademark of Whammo). It is a non-contact sport, where speed and knowledge play a major part (a good vertical helps as well), ultiamte is a sport for almost anyone (there are teams for men, women, co-ed, masters, and even highschool!). It can be played by the serious competitor or just for fun and is a great way to stay in shape. It is one of the few sports that does not require a separate referee, the players in the game have the final say.

The game starts off with seven on a team starting on opposite sides of the end zone. Only one person may handle the disc at a time, and the person may not move except for a pivot foot (no taveling). The person then moves the disc by throwing it to their teammates, hoping to make it to the opposite endzone, thus scoring a point. If at any time the disc is knocked down or dropped, it is immediately the opposing team's disc where it lands. A quick transition is usually where a good team can score points. Once the point is scored, the teams line up on the endzone line (losers walk) and play continues. Games are typically played to 13 or 15 win by two.

Here is a link to the 10 simple rules of Ultimate.

Definition of throws

by Steve Sandvik

The Hammer: (also know as a tomato) A traditional over the head throw with a forehand grip. It is usually released at about a 45 degree angle, and when caught is upside-down and parallel to the ground. It will have a high arcing pattern and relies on aerodynamics or "gliding" for placement.

The Dying Quale: (or Sputnick) A poorly thrown hammer that goes up, then runs out of power and lofts to the ground. Usually the disc will float back and forth as it decends from its unhealthy altitude. This throw is most responsible for "block parties" as well as 13 stches in my forehead. Usually comes about from an amateur hammer thrower, or a nine count panicked "Hail Mary" throw leading to the inevitible "Ambulance" or "Hospital" situation.

The Blade: A Hammer that does not turn over. (A nasty thing to catch) It is released vertically above the head and comes down the same way. It is usually fast and hard. it "cuts through the air, and does not use the aerodynamic wing shape of the disc. Also the leading cause of premature disk death. The blade is the primary throw in the game of "Blades" or "Cower" wherin one thrower throws the disc as high as possible and the reciever must jump in the air and catch it one handed. (No peekie is a fun variation as well)

The Thummer: (or Scromato) A reverse grip hammer. (i.e. the thumb is on the inside of the disc) Can fly like either the Hammer or the Blade.

The Scoober: This is a hammer that is released completely upside down. It does not have the high arc of the hammer, but rather flys about head level or just above. The release is from either above the head or above shoulder HEIGHT. Generally used as a quick, high release, short distance throw. It also has a tendancy to "waffle" or or arc side to side.

The Gack: (or elbow buster) A Scoober released below the shoulder.(it can also be air bounced) It is released from a backhand stance with a forehand grip, with the disc upside down. It relies on almost pure wrist motion, and the snap of the forearm. (thus the name elbow buster)
