Getting 3D Desktop in Gutsy
Once I installed Gutsy, I started playing around with it and one of the first things I wanted to do was to set up the 3d desktop and I had a pleasant surprise since i found that compiz-fusion was already installed in Gutsy. So what I had to do was to install the compizconfig-settings-manager(ccsm). This can be done using apt-get, Synaptic package manager or any other way you know to install packages in Ubuntu. Once installed, go to System----->Preferences------->Appearance and click on the Visual Effects tab to get the window shown below.
The next step is to click on the Custom radio button and then(after a message pops up asking whether it can use the changed settings or get back to the previous settings) click on Preferences next to the Custom radio button to get the window shown below.
Enable all plug-ins you want. You may want to enable Rotate cube, Desktop cube, Wobbly windows as a beginning. You may play around with it. Once you set the options and close the windows, you are ready to see your 3d cube desktop. Some short-cuts that may be useful are Ctrl+Alt+Left key(or right key), Ctrl+Alt+Left mouse click+Drag Mouse. Wobbly windows can be experienced by just moving any open window on the desktop. Shift+F10 gives slow effects. Some screenshots of my desktop are shown below.
