10th Annual Vietnamese Interacting as One (VIA-1) Conference
The Vietnamese Interacting As One (VIA-1) Conference is a three day event that seeks to generate teamwork and unity as well as promote leadership for all involved. Hundreds of students and young professionals will learn to hone their leadership skills, hold discussions with speakers, and explore issues within the Vietnamese-American youth community. By coming together, we can achieve solidarity as one group, collaborate on issues concerning our own communities and universities, and to encourage the growth of Vietnamese leaders. This conference also aims to foster awareness and appreciation of the Vietnamese culture to all attendees.
One of the biggest uniting factors of VIA-1 is the CPP event, which stands for the Collective Philanthropy Project. At this conference, we will be holding a fundraising event to raise money for the beneficiary for the 2011-2012 CPP Campaign, which is Children of Vietnam‘s Hope System of Care Campaign. More details about this event can be found on the VIA-1 Fundraiser page.
The theme for the conference this year is, “A Decade of Progress“.
Ten years ago, the VSA at the University of Cincinnati hosted the first ever Vietnamese Interacting as One Conference. The theme was “A Standing Start”, marking the beginning of the development of the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of the Midwest. In honor of the past ten years of continuous hard work, we now come together to where it all began to celebrate the struggles and triumphs of the UVSA community and its supporters to uphold the identity and the culture of Vietnamese Americans in the Midwest.
This year, we are proud to bring you a variety of inspirational and motivational speakers and workshops. The workshops that we have this year include social issues facing Vietnamese Americans and also professional development topics. Workshop facilitators demonstrate their knowledge of the history, culture, advocacy and activism to help students explore their role on how they can help shape global issues. We have four different tracks this year, explained below:
- Historical and Cultural Impact
In order for students to become passionate leaders in their community, individuals must have awareness and be in touch with not only themselves but also their history and their culture. The workshops in this track will be focused on historical relevance from previous generations and cultural significance on how it shapes who we are and who we will become. - Advocacy, Activism, and Civic Engagement
Once students are actively involved, we would encourage them to take the next step and be more actively involved in a broader community. The workshops introduced to the students here would be raising advocacy and opportunities to be more involved politically, in the non-profit industry, and much more. - Media Outlets (Media and Asian Americans)
The past few years have been exciting in terms of technological advancements and this track would be focused on how to utilize those tools for our community and respective organizations. Students will be exposed on the stereotypes that the media has and how this can affect one’s learning curve, how different media tools can reach different target audiences and how this all ties together to something tangible that the everyday University of Cincinnati student can bring back. - Leadership Development
Students from the University of Cincinnati would be exposed to great leaders throughout the Midwest region who would be there sharing their stories on how they rose from being a student to a leader. There will also be panels where students would be able to ask questions and receive tips and advice on how to become more efficient leaders. Many of the skills acquired from this track would be applicable to everyday interactions can be bought back to their organization.
