Research Interests

My research stands at the intersection between German and international history. Like many graduate students, I was trained according to the “nation-state” model, with courses in French, German, British, and Russian/Soviet history reinforcing the sense that most historical controversies relate to the internal dynamics of particular societies. As an assistant professor charged with teaching the history of Germany, I try to stay current with the broad outlines of German historiography. Ultimately, though, I am trying to develop new lines of inquiry that place the classical nation-states within a broader context.
