Since you have been studying eating disorders, you have learned the differences between the disorders and some treatment options. Now, you are going to act as a treatment option. (Make sure you read all the steps before proceeding.)

Step 1:

Click on one of the following disorders to refresh your memory about the differences, the causes (especially the neurotransmitters affected), some warning signs of the disorders, and the medications available.

Anorexia Bulimia Binge Eating

Step 2:

At each website find the following information and write down or print the information:

1. The definition of this disorder.

2. The symptoms of this disorder.

3. Define neurotransmitters and how they are disrupted by this disorder.

3. The medications available for each disorder and the side effects of the medications.

Step 3:

To prepare yourself for the therapy session, think of several questions to ask the patient to learn about their disorder. Remember, this is your first therapy session together, so you are unaware of which disorder affects them. You are to identify the disorder, tell them as much medical information as possible, and then prescribe a medication. For example, “When you are going through a rough time do you eat more or less food than normal?”

Step 4:

Bring the questions to class because you will be acting as the psychiatrist tomorrow.
