The Training of today prepares us for the battles of tomorrow

The Importance of learning Self Defense

Life is unpredictable and uncertain. Many people have a "invincibility" myth that nothing bad will ever happen to them. This line of thought can be very dangerous, if not deadly. Basic self-defense training can give one the ability to take care of one's self in many dangerous attack situations, along with giving a person the confidence needed to take care of one's self and also to possibiliy never be a victim in the first place. As it is said, it is better to be safe than sorry. This program is unique on Purdue's campus as it is one of the only free, short self defense programs offered on the campus. The program emphasizes basic concepts as opposed to specific techiques that can be easily forgotten in stresful attack situations. While we specificaly encourage women to take the class as we stress tactics against rape, we encourage men to take the class as well as we believe that anyone can benefit from taking this class.

What is Included in the Seminar?

The seminar starts off with general information and statistics about how to keep from being a victim and about certain themes that occur with violent crime and sexual assault. The seminar then goes through how to break out of wrist, neck, and lapel grabs along with bear hugs. Basic attacks are also taught. Following this we discuss on the ground self defense, which is important for rape defense. We wrap up with basic weapon defense

Who Teaches the Seminar?

The main instructor for the seminar is Kelly George, a first dan black belt in taekwondo who has been practicing for six year. Originally trained with the nationally renowned Sean Ramey of Kentucky, she has been through numerous self-defense seminars. Much of her self-defense training was received from Sensei Ward, a local 7th degree black belt in karate who has been studying and teaching self defense for many years. Assistants for the seminar include members of Won Do Kwan Taekwondo and Purdue Organization for Women's Equality and Rights.
