Steps in the Engineering Design Process

The Engineering Design Process includes six steps. For each step, click the button for an example of how engineers might go about designing a new car.

Step 1: State the Problem. What is the problem that needs to be solved?

Step 2: Generate Ideas. Where can information be found related to the problem? How can this information be used?

Step 3: Plan and Select a Solution. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each idea? Which idea seems best for solving the problem?

Step 4: Build the Item. Based on what the engineers know, they will build the item.

Step 5: Evaluate. Did the solution solve the problem? How can the solution be improved?

Step 6: Present the Results. As engineers design and develop, they share results with others and try to find even better ways of solving the problem.
