Post-doctoral research associate in bioinformatics and computational life sciences

Post-doctoral research associate positions are available at Purdue’s Bindley Bioscience Center. The hired individual will be supervised by Dr. Bartek Rajwa. The candidates are expected to participate in multiple interdisciplinary research endeavors pursued by Dr. Rajwa and his close collaborators at the Dept. of Computer Science, Food Science, Psychological Sciences, and Basic Medical Sciences.

Specifically, the candidates are expected to:

  • design, develop and implement statistics, informatics, and machine-learning solutions for data collected using proteomics/metabolomics (through mass spectrometry), genomics, and cytomics (cytometry, microscopy, high-content screening).
  • curate, analyze, compile and visualize the data for manuscripts, reports, and grant applications.
  • significantly contribute to the development of new bioinformatics methods pursued by Dr. Rajwa and his collaborators

Required background

Ph.D. degree in biology, physics, computer science, or related field. Sufficient training and knowledge in statistical data analysis, bioinformatics, or machine-learning approaches are required. Some experience (and strong desire to learn more!) with wrangling, curation, analysis, and visualization of high-content biological data, particularly large-scale proteomics, metabolomics, flow cytometry, and biological imaging.

Skills

  • The ability to learn new methods and operate independently in the laboratory work environment. Strong time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines and handle confidential research information with discretion.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
  • Working knowledge of rapid prototyping tools for algorithmic development, scientific computing, and statistical analysis (R and Python).
  • The ability to develop reusable, self-contained, and portable data analysis pipelines using R notebooks, Jupyter notebooks, and Docker would be a huge plus.
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills are required.

Dutites

  • 40%: Conduct research experiments, collect and analyze data, apply the data science methods to the result of biological studies, with particular emphasis on computational neuroscience, biosafety, and biosurveillance
  • 20% Perform database and literature search, provide summaries of the existing state of knowledge, prepare and execute meta-analysis
  • 20% Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations.
  • 15% Participate in data acquisition using microscopy, cytometry, optical spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry tools.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned, including attending scientific conferences and meetings.
