ABSTRACT
This introduction begins by describing the historical origins, intentions and content of Kant's lectures on anthropology and the history of scholarly commentary on Kant's anthropological thought. It is shown that the content of these lectures raises significant historical and philosophical questions about Kant's philosophical system concerning the compatibility of an empirical study of free beings and concerning the relationship between pragmatic and moral investigations. Finally, the essays in this collection are introduced.
