Course Synopsis

EDCI 663 examines interactive video and multimedia. Historically, the term interactive video has referred to video responsive to the user, once commonly defined as a laser videodisc controlled by computer. While it examines this groundbreaking multimedia technology, the course will mainly focus on newer digital multimedia, including digital video, and multimedia delivery systems including CD-ROM, DVD, and the World Wide Web. These technologies are widely used in training and education today.

Course topics include: history, overview, research, evaluation, design/production techniques, and authoring interactive multimedia. The goal of this class is to make you knowledgeable about interactive multimedia -- what it is, how it is done, what the research says it, etc. -- and to introduce you to the design and development of instructional interactive multimedia. Incoming students should have knowledge of educational technology, instructional design, and prior experience in the design and development of computer-based instruction. Previous experience with multimedia authoring (e.g., Director, Dreamweaver, Flash ) is particularly beneficial.
