Getting Started with Video Captioning

Captions provide access to audio content for users who are unable to hear the audio. This is true for users who have a hearing impairment and also for users who are in a noisy environment or an environment where the audio would be distracting to others.

The process for adding the caption to the video depends on the format used.
YouTube videos
QuickTime Videos
Windows Media Player (v11)
WMV (or MP4) media file and caption file in same folder

Make sure the base names of the .wmv (or .mp4) and the .smi files are exactly the same.
Check the settings in Windows Media Player. There are two settings that must be set.
Under the Play menu, set Lyrics, Captions and Subtitles to "On if available".
Under the Tools menu, select Options , select Security tab, then click the checkbox to "Show local captions when present".
Click Apply , then OK .
You must exit WMP and relaunch before captions will be displayed.

an .asx file is used to associate the caption file and media file that are stored in different locations.
