(Information for Janice's Advisees) Credit Transfer Procedure for Physics Courses

Taking Courses at Institutions not Affiliated with Purdue

Students who are considering taking a course at another college, university or institution should consult the Purdue Transfer Credit Database to ensure that the credit will transfer to Purdue directly. It would be wise to print the results of your query and discuss them with your academic advisor. When selecting a course, it is important that the credit transfers directly. For example, a Mechanics course that transfers as PHYS 17200 can be used to satisfy the mechanics requirement for physics majors. A Mechanics course that transfers as PHYS 1xxxx cannot be used to satisfy the requirement.

Important things to remember about transfer credit from colleges, universities and institutions not affiliated with Purdue:

* The credit will transfer but not the grade. A C- or higher is required for the credit to transfer.

* If the same course has already been taken at Purdue, the credit will not replace the grade in grade point average calculations. However, the credit can be used to satisfy degree requirements.

* The student will need to have the college, university or institution send the transcript to the Office of Admissions at Purdue: Office of Admissions, 475 Stadium Mall Dr., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2050.

Course Evaluation

Check the transfer credit database . If the course doesn't appear on the Transfer Credit Database, then an evaluation can be requested by:

a) Purdue Credit Evaluation Office or

b) the ISS office

Anyone of these parties (not the student) will be asked to supply all the necessary information for the evaluation. The documents have to be official documents (or authorized English translations of the documents) .

Minimum necessary documents for evaluation:

* The complete name of the institution.
* The course subject area (may be letters or numbers), number and name.
* Course description, syllabus for the course in question that shows the contents covered. (including the laboratory work).
* Course pre-requisites and co-requisites (especially math) and also which majors/programs the course is intended.

* Textbooks used.

If interested in a course evaluation please have Purdue Credit Evaluation Office, the ISS office or the professor in your school to send an email to Janice Thomaz (thomazj@purdue.edu) with the request.
