Janice's information on GPA grade replacement:

The ONLY way to replace your grade on the GPA is by taking the exact same course. However you can only take the same course up to three times.

Below is the portion of university regulations that address how a cumulative GPA is calculated.

http://www.purdue.edu/studentregulations/regulations_procedures/grades.html

Look under item J specifically.

The cumulative GPA for an undergraduate student is a weighted average of all grades received as an undergraduate student. With the guidance of his/her academic advisor, a student may enroll in a non-repeatable course up to three times. In such cases, the same course* is to be used, the same grade mode and only the most recent grade received shall be included in the cumulative GPA. In the case of a course in which a conditional grade has been improved by examination, the most recent grade received shall be used.

* An equivalent course may be used when authorized by the faculty member in charge of said course. Transfer credits from other colleges and universities may be used to fulfill degree requirements, but cannot be used to remove Purdue recorded grades from GPA calculations.

Request for a 4th Enrollment for Janice's students:

Under the University Three Attempt Policy, effective Fall 2013, students must request a 4th enrollment in a course. If approved by the Associate Dean of the student's college, the student will be allowed to take the course one final time. The College of Science does not consider 5th attempts unless there are serious extenuating circumstances.

Process:

  1. Students will meet with their academic advisor to discuss the appropriateness of and reasons for submitting a fourth attempt request.
  2. If the advisor supports the 4th enrollment, students will provide their academic advisor with the 4th Enrollment Form outlining why a fourth attempt is being requested, what prevented successful completion of the course after three attempts and a plan that will be implemented to ensure that a fourth attempt will result in successful completion of the requested course. Successful completion is defined as earning a grade that meets degree requirements. If the CRN is available, it must be included on the form.
  3. A student's advisor will present a request and the 4th Enrollment Form to the Director of Academic Advising for review. If a fourth attempt request is appropriate, the Director will request a review and decision from the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.
  4. If approved by the Associate Dean, the Registrar's Office will receive the request and determine its final approval. Fourth attempt approvals are not guaranteed.
  5. NEW procedure Fall 2020. The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education will review and approve the student's request. The student's advisor will receive notice of the approval (email) and will request that the student enter an override request in Scheduling Assistant.
